Brian's Best and Worst of Europe

Best

Accommodation in Edinburgh is Millfield Guest House. The owner was so friendly and gave a lot of useful advice and information. The room looked as if it came straight out of an antique magazine. The breakfast menu had a variety of foods, all of which tasted great.

Public transportation in Rome. The Metro was clean (except for the outside of the trains). It was very easy to understand.

Most affordable is Gimmewald. There is little to do but eat, hike and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The only additional cost was the lift to other villages in the Alps.

Best food in Cinque Terre. Every night I tried something different and every night I was having the best yet. The menus have seafood, pasta, and vegetables. Something for everyone (even my picky wife).

Most scenic is Gimmewald. Words and pictures cannot describe it. Around every trail we hiked was a new view of a mountain, a small herd of cows, a waterfall, or a field of flowers. Coming in a close second is Inverness with the rolling green hills and Loch Ness. Urqhuart Castle is located on Loch Ness, and the view from inside the castle is astounding.

Friendliness of people in Italy. We met several people in Rome who went out of their way to help us. A woman helped us find our train when we were having a rough day. Vincenzo practically escorted us out of the train station to our hostel in Rome. The people have no problem speaking (or attempting to speak) English.

Worst

Accommodation in London is the Leinster Inn and Astor Hostel. They quoted us 36 pounds price when we reserved it and changed the price to 44 when we arrived. The bunk-bed was broken so Dana slept on the floor. The fire alarm went off nightly waking us up several times. The bathrooms were filthy and lacked toilet paper.

Public transportation in Paris. We didn't even try the buses. The Metro was absolutely disgusting and full of litter. It smelled like week old urine. The trains were over crowded and hot. It was full of beggars who did not like to take no for an answer.

Least affordable is London. Our pathetic Hostel in London cost more than our room in Edinburgh. Sights were expensive.

Worst food in Gimmewald. There is very little to choose from and most of it is swiss cheese or meat. The wine tasted like battery acid.

Least scenic is London. Aside from the many fascinating museums the landscape is flat and paved. Busy roads and large crowds flock everywhere.

Least friendly people in Paris. I can go on and on. The Taxis will not pull over for you. When you ask how much to go to a certain place they will say "ah, it is forbidden to tell" or they will simply roll the window up on your arm and drive away. They do not like to speak English even though most of them speak it well. They simply do not go out of their way to make any part of your time in their precious city enjoyable.
